Critical Study

I am going to base my critical study around portraiture, as this is what I would like to specialise in. I would like to talk about the different styles of portraiture (Nude, Vanity, traditional, environment, candid, abstract, glamour, lifestyle ) and what it depicts to the viewer. I also want to talk about what emotions are provoked by the imagery depending on the medium, style, and more.

Photographers to research:

-Julia Margaret Cameron

-Jane Bown

 -Man Ray
Man Ray is classed as a surrealist who is most known for his use of solarisation.

-Yousuf Karsh
Photographed the notable people from the century.

-Norman Parkinson
Parkinson is known for photographing ‘action realism’.

-Richard Avedon
His portraiture defined America’s image of style and beauty in the second half of the 20th century.

Don McCullin
Shocked war marine- realism and true events

David Bailey
Portrait and scenic photography

Things to include:
- What styles of portraiture there are

-What the photographer is trying to depict

-Film vs digital, does the medium effect what is depicted?

-What is portraiture used for now compared to what it used to be used for?

-How the people in the portraits as changed

  1. Kirsty, this essay suits your area of photography and I feel you have found an interesting angle with the different emotional impacts caused by images.

  2. I like your approach to this critical study. Because you are looking at a range of photographers, its would be interesting for you to explore portrait photography as a evolutionary basis.

  3. Love the idea of looking at Man Rays work - you could try solarization in the darkroom? as well as digitally? its a really cool techniques thats not used as much as it should be :P

  4. I like your theme, it is based around the area you are the strongest in. The discussions you've chosen are very interesting and have a lot of theories associated with them. You could look at the work of Annie Leibovitz and Irving Penn as historical references

  6. A very interesting idea, You could look at the Idea of self perspective and how a selfie could be see and a projection of what we want the be seen like while a portrait is someone else's perspective
